Detailed Course Notes

Children should be 8 years old or above to attend this course.

This five day action packed holiday is a chance for you and your family to try some of the most exciting outdoor activities, all in one go. It is just great fun from start to finish.

Who is it for?

You don't need any experience, as we will start with the basics and move at your own pace. You don't even need to be super fit, just be willing to have a go and have some fun.

Course Content

Activities will depend upon a number of factors, such as the weather, but will normally be chosen from the following list:.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Learn to control and steer your craft, then head off on a journey on the lake or river, exploring as you go.

Rock Climbing and Abseiling

With a safety rope attached, challenge yourself to scale the rocks and reach the top. Then if you like, abseil back down again.

Abseil Tower

Whether it's an exhilarating way down from the top of the crag, or an activity in its own right - we have a purpose built abseil tower to help you get to grips with this exciting skill.

Mountain Walk

Snowdonia is famous for its classic walks and scrambles. We will have lots of beautiful, scenic walks to choose from.

Orienteering

After practicing some basic skills, race to find points around the woods, using a map and compass.

Optional Activity

As a group, you may decide that you want to do some more of one of the activities. Alternatively, we may be able to offer Gorge Scrambling or Sea Level Traversing.

With each session, we will explain the equipment and safety procedures involved, and let you do as much as possible yourselves. In this way you will get a true picture of the activity, and will be able to decide if you would like to take it further and do some more. Although the instructors will encourage you, it will always be your choice exactly what and how much you want to do.

Customer Reviews For This Course / Holiday

Best week ever

Heidi Welch

We had a perfect week at PYB, our first time at the centre.
We're a family of 4, 50-ish year old mum and dad, 2 daughters 16 and 12. All of us are relatively fit except for me (mum) - I hadn't done any sports for years and am totally out of shape. The kids had done a little indoor climbing, abseiling and some of the water sports before, and dad had done a little rock climbing, but 35 years ago.
I thought that it would be impossible that anyone could find activities that suit us all, but out instructor Colin did just that. He tailored the week absolutely perfectly for each of us.
We did canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding and abseiling on day 1, rock climbing on day 2 (I thought I wouldn't be able to do it at all, and I could!), then coasteering on day 3 - that was just the best thing ever - we all loved it! - plus a bit of indoor bouldering in the evening (I was seriously bad at that - the kids were like monkeys), then hiking up a mountain on day 4(I found out it's hard to OD on salbutamol), and gorge climbing on the last day (that was scary and exciting in equal measure.
Our rooms were OK. We had 2 en-suite double rooms above the bar, so good Wifi access (perhaps shower screen could do with a bit of a deep clean). The food was perfect for long days out, very healthy and delicious and an enormous amount of choice (loved the flapjacks!), and the bar is great (loved the Welsh cider). We met nice people, and we loved chatting about the courses they did.
We've taken a lot from this week. The kids had great fun and would love to come back to one of the teenagers-only courses, the husband is planning to start rock climbing, and I was constantly amazed at what I was capable of.
Thanks for a great week, Colin, and for looking after us so well, we loved every minute of it!

Fantastic week for the whole family.

Tracey

I don't normally write reviews but after a fantastic week at Plas y Brenin I thought I would just write a few lines to recommend this holiday. Myself, husband and 10 year old daughter had a lovely week in the sun, wind and rain doing a range of activities. Accommodation lovely, food fantastic, people all helpful and friendly, professional instruction, hire of superb equipment was very beneficial and just overall all good fun. Thanks to Greg (the instructor) who was very patient and great with the children. Now looking at what course to book next.

Awesome!!

Watson Family

Family of four - children aged 14 and 9.

What a week, it couldn't have been bettered!! Instructors are excellent - they make it fun and know how far to push your limits. We are a family of 4, and despite each one of us having prior experience in different parts of the week's activities, the instructors managed to fully cater to all abilities. They really know how to teach - and I am saying that with 20 years of University lecturing experience including leading numerous field trips. Accommodation and food is very good to excellent, particularly the food and constant supply of hot and cold drinks.

Only downside are a few aches and pains on your return home - but honestly that just shows that you have had a great week.

Are we going again - for sure! When? As soon as possible.

Well done to all at Plas y Brenin.

Fantastic!!

Dave Thompson

My wife, daughter and I had a wonderful time, gorge walking, rock climbing, kayaking, hill walking and much much more. The instructor was excellent, accommodation, food and location superb. I'd thoroughly recommend the course and Plas y Brenin.

Awesome

Shaun & Connor

Anyone wanting to have adventure in North wales? PYB offer the most amazing setting, food, accommodation and instruction. The week was a non stop frenzy of activity, well organised and the instructors were extremely well qualified , yet able to take the time to ensure everyone was happy and having fun. Amazing place, very friendly we will definitely return.

Big thanks to Spike and Paul.

Loved the action packed course.

Shona and Alasdair Campbell

Loved the action packed course. Intructors were great, food really good and the whole experience one to remember and encourage further participation in the activities. Although notes said nothing in particular about fitness levels needed, you probably would struggle quite a lot if you didn't regularly do some activity.

Great Week - but some room for further improvement

Martin

We had a really great week with the family in May/June. Weather a little mixed but the instructors used the options of different activities to fit with the weather very well.

All instructors were great (especially Dave) all very knowledgeable and all very safety conscious - which gave us lots of confidence in tackling the activities knowing whatever we were ask to do was safe.

Food excellent, worth coming on the course just to be fed. Room good, but we were in the top room 36A and it got very warm with no real way of cooling the room through ventilation due to the windows only opening a few inches; and lots of steps up to the room (56) which we did 10 times a day on average. Well I guess it helped us to burn the meals off. Special mention should go to the stores (inc staff) which were great, friendly and lots of stock to help those of us who don't have all the kit.

Improvements that could have been made (please read these as ways of improving an already great experience further rather than as a criticism):
- as this was a family week I think it would have been better to keep the same lead instructor for the whole week.
- put a couple of fans in room 36A when warm
- I personally felt the group was too large (15 in total), on a number of activities the size of the group meant waiting around for long periods, which was disappointing
- the instructors although excellent could have engaged the group more in deciding options for the day - this did happen to a point, e.g. which fell to climb; but this was limited.
- the brochure we used to book (2010) talked about an over night camp - this clearly had been removed in 2011 which was also disappointing.

In summary, a great week which I would definitely recommend to other families but there is still room for further improvement ahead of the next course.

Thanks for the experience.

Superb! Exceeded All Expectations

Phil Cliff

Myself and my two sons (aged 12 and 9) have just returned from the course and have had a fantastic week. We couldn't fault it. The variety, challenge, level of instruction and safety of all the activities was first class. In the five days we achieved/experienced rock climbing (inside wall and outside rocks), mountaineering (walking/scrambling), gorge walking, canoeing, kayacking and orienteering. All the instructors were brilliant, particularly with the kids, and everyone on our course (15) had a great time. We had a minimum of 2 and a maximum of three instructors with us at all times and safety was always a priority but it never got in the way of our experience, sense of achievement or fun. The centre itself is comfortable and a level above basic. The rooms are comfortable and en-suite. the food is good fresh home cooking and the kitchen staff were brilliant; my son is coeliac which means he can't have gluten and it just wasn't an issue. We are definitely going to book another course for next year and would thoroughly recommend this course to all families, irrespective of your specific family unit structure.

25-29 April 2011

Ian, Cameron and Amelia Scott

We had a wonderful week at PYB. This was mine and Cam's 2nd visit (2005) and Milly's first visit. The website and brochure reference a camp out night but we didn't do it this week or previously. This is what we did:

Monday: Rock climbing, bouldering, abseil tower, climbing wall
Tuesday: Orienteering at PYB and then ski slope
Wednesday: Snowdon hill walk
Thursday: Open canoe and kayak at PYB
Friday: Sea levelling, Rhosneigr Angelsey

We loved Monday and Wednesday the best and Tuesday the worst, mainly because we had a 'fill in' instructor because ours couldn't teach skiing and Milly had a few falls, and hurt her wrist! Thursday and Friday were very enjoyable also but difficult for Milly to fully participate because of her wrist sprain.

The food was again excellent, all credit to the catering staff for great quality and variety of menus. I would like to see some salad options as well if we come again. The packed lunch options are fantastic, perfect for restoring energy levels throughout the day.

Our instructors (not skiing) - Dave and Helen - were fantastic and struck the right balance between safety and pushing us individually to get to the next level. Cameron progressed really well on the bouldering with Dave and Milly paced herself on her biggest ever mountain walk!

The facilities for adventure sports are superb and the location is simply stunning. All the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly in the stores area.

We shared a 3 bed room, which was a good size. Our only complaint was the shower which had constant running water even when switched off (not good at night time) and we had to get maintenance out to fix a leaky tap. Otherwsie everything was fine.

Suggestions for PYB:
Take out the ski element and add in mountain biking or a nature/treasure hunt around the lakes - there is so much wildlife. In time, a swimming pool where the ski slope is and a gym/sauna would be good additions.

Suggestions if you are thinking of going:
Don't be put off by any particular activity or the schedule, it is very flexible and most of the activities can be changed to suit individual needs - the instructors are very good at listening to what you want and adapting the course appropriately
Take plenty of water bottles
Casual/walking gear for the evenings is fine (no one dresses up!)
Only O2 seems to get any signal at PYB so be prepared to use the payphone. There is wifi in the bar area if you/your kids need to get on line.
When you queue for your dinner make sure you get a starter and main in one go, or you'll end up queueing twice!
An ipod is a good idea for any journeys in the minibus
Take a good book, you do get a bit of spare time between 5 and 7 and 8 and 10 usually.
Explore the immedaite area around PYB - the woods and headland down the side of the lake are beautiful
Take some games/cards for the kids
Pack plenty of ibuprofen if you're over 40!!

HAVE FUN.

The best Holiday I have had with the Kids

Colin Chadwick

Don't expect this course to be a relaxed affair. It is busy and action packed, you will feel tired your muscles might ache but you can't miss an activity this is just the adults by the way.
The kids 9 & 11 absolutely loved it had loads of energy were up and ready to go each day. The activites were challenging but the instruction was brilliant aimed at the right level for all. On Monday morning when lots of families were thrust into groups for the first time it seemed daunting but by mid morning children and parents were chatting and helping each other on the activites. The bar was a welcome retreat in the evening for adults to relax and chat. The kids very much formed groups and traded stories or explored the complex in the boundries of the site. I can honeslty say it beats any other holiday for the fact that activites, food and accomodation are in the price of the holiday. Food is of a good quality and lots of variety (so no shopping, cooking or washing up).
The rooms are comfortable. The families that were on my holiday made it extra special as we got on very well. I am thinking of coming back in a year or so I enjoyed it that much

The boys said it was even better than a skiing holiday!!

Mark, Jackie, Luke and Toby

An excellent family experience. 10 fun and exciting activities over 5 days. The weather started off very wet and windy, it being Easter, but the instructors moved the activities around so that we made the very best of the 3 good days of weather we had, and survived, and even enjoyed, the 2 wet days.
The instuctors were very good at working out the abilities of the families, so we were never left feeling we wished we had been allowed to do more, for example the whole family played in our kayaks in and around the fast running water under the bridge for about 1/2 an hour at the end of the water sports day. All the 4 families worked well together for the whole week, and all the children had lots of fun together, on and off the course, as they were in years 5, 6 and 7. We all gave 5 out of 5 for the accomodation and the course. Be prepared to be very well fed and have a great week. Enjoy!

Fun Family Week

Insley Family

We took part in the Introdution to Adventure Sports for Families and had a brilliant time. The weather was mixed but it didn't stop us doing anything. The week was jam packed and extremely well organised. Plas y Brenin has wonderful facilities and equipment - you can borrow everything, so no need to worry if you don't have your own suitable clothing etc.

Food was fantastic and we never went hungry - loads to eat all the time and the cakes, well what can I say, yummy! The families we met up with were great, everyone had a go at the activities.

We had such a good time, we are certainly thinking of going again next year.

A successful week for all involved

Daniel Wright, Louise Wright and Mitchell Wright.

This was our second visit to PYB, a first for Louise (9). We had a very successful visit last time (With Helen Barnard) and so expectations were very high.
The weather was a challenge throughout the week and so not only did Cath and her team have to contend with what seemed a large group but also having to match the activities to conditions.
From our point of view, collectively and individually, the week presented us all with new challenges, new knowledge, new experiences and new friends.
Both Mitchell and Louise enjoyed new highs, Snowdon was a great decision! Louise really enjoyed the rock climbing, the instruction and support was spot on.
Mitchell enjoyed sea traverse, the jump in to the sea was outside his comfort zone by a fair margin but the encouragement (And calmness) from Cath helped him to take the challenge, I will never forget his elation. I am also in your debt for jumping in with Louise so that she could also enjoy the same success!
On to some practical issues:
Instruction - Exceptional.
Kit - excellent plenty of it and in good condition considering the heavy use.
Transport - excellent (Even when I missed the bus!)
Food - One of PYBs massive differentiators from its peers and competitors - We thought the food was excellent.
Course Content - Activities - Excellent instruction and excellent decisions.
Accommodation - Very clean and perfect for the purpose.
Please extend our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in our week, especially Cath, Ruth, Sheila, Dave and Kenny. We will definately return next year.

best week

eddie goodey

my daugter and i had one of the most enjoyable weeks holidays so far the instructors were first class the facilities were brilliant the food was great and we met people who we will certainly be seeing again if you want a week you will never forget go on this you and your children will have an absolute ball

A great value week in the mountains

Dave Langmead

Thank you for an excellent week. Our group of 8 took part in all the activities on offer (except skiing) and found the days challenging and yet great fun.
Guides: Right amount of tuition with the main focus on letting the group get on with it while remaining safe. Always seemed fresh and helpful.
Food: Excellent throughout. The layout of the dining room could perhaps be looked at to avoid the chicane around the drinks machine with diners queueing and coming back with food. Perhaps also a stagger to avoid having to to get all courses at the same time. On one occasion one of our party did not get a main course because 5 mins late and started with the soup before picking up main course.
Accom: Adequate and comfortable although difficult getting cases up into the attic rooms.

Thanks again for an excellent week

Family Fun in the Sun

Mike Sheridan

I think there were five families and nine children in our group. Monday started with a climbing trip near llanberis. If you don't know the ropes don't worry, you will soon learn! We climbed 'as a three'; my daughter, me and my wife ! We had the best of the weather which made it all the more enjoyable. Our instructors for the day were fantastic. They had a great balance of calm instruction and firm guidance. Taking us all for ice cream later that day was a real hit with all the kids! Tues we did kayaking and canoeing on the lakes at the centre with Anne and Sheila as instructors. Tremendous fun, lots of variety and you get to try out all the different options available. Our instructors pitched it just right, balancing fun, variety and activity. Wed was to be skiing on the dry slope but with a great weather window we had a day hillwalking. A welcome change to our itinery ! This was a challenge for kids and adults alike and finished with a cooling swim in the lake back at the centre. Again Anne & Sheila were our guides. There was a bit of scrambling on the way and they were both always there paying close attention, Later that day we travelled by mini bus to Angelsey for a barbeque and overnight camp. The site was a beautiful spot on Holy head island. The kind of place you may not discover unless taken by those 'in the know'. Sea wall traversing (getting wet !) followed, then more climing on Friday. PYB instructors are incredible, inspiring confidence in kids and adults alike. Congratulations to Anne Fisher who lead our week. You were a joy to be with. We returned home motivated to do much more.

multi activitys great!

christopher

multi activatys great coz on each day of the course you do something new. for example... on tuesday you do the kayaking and canoeing, on friday you could do skiing. It's realy fun and easy to make freinds to!!!. You also get to go camping out at a campsite where you have a barbecue tea and play rounders on the beach!

so if you want a good course .... you must chose multi activaty week for families.
