Customer Reviews For This Course
Excellent two days
Another excellent weekend. Lighthouses, cliffs and caves all seen and ticked off, along with seals, guillemots, razorbills, puffins, ganets, shags, fulmars and the set of a soap opera all in unbroken sunshine. Who could ask for more?
Memorable but not enough!
I had such a great time on this course, I'm sure that it will remain a fond memory for some time. Everything was good, friendly people in the bar (important) and on the course, great instructor who was fun and amazing sea kayaking in the hot sunshine! We saw lots of sea birds and a seal nibbled on the end of my kayak and followed for a short while which was possibly the highlight although this is hard to choose as there was a lot of lovely moments. The only point of development is time on the water (which is the only reason i can't give 5 stars). This was very limited with kit sorting, travel to the coast etc. The centre needs to be more flexible for this course eg. make exception to collect kit night before or early start before breakfast to collect kit and have the briefing and furthermore earlier start on the Sunday perhaps. Thanks for such a memorable and fun weekend though, really inspiring.
A lovely, invigorating weekend
I really enjoyed the weekend. The group were all of a reasonable standard which meant that we could be a bit more adventurous than I was expecting (which was good). We saw one working lighthouse and one more that was no longer functioning, lots of cliffs - with lots of sea-birds, including peregrines - and plenty of caves. So we couldn't ask for our money back. On day two we paddled from Red Dwarf Bay to Puffin Island and then came ashore after going through some "exciting" water. It was nice to do a one-way trip. Adam and Ben were fun to be with, led us well and showed good appreciation for our abilities. I'll probably do it again sometime. I also loved being back at PyB, having not come for a while. Love the new en-suite rooms!
My intro to sea kayaking
I'd done an intensive 6 month training through the scouts to get 2 star but was keen to try sea kayaking as I felt it was more my kind of thing with the weather, tides & navigation thrown in to the mix.
Very enjoyable with seas at up to force 3 with a stretch of force 4 - tested me to my limit.
Leaders Adam and Ben had good judgement of the conditions and group - made me glad to be in a group as I wouldn't have had the experience to know how to read the tides and winds.
What a Superb Weekend
The course provided what it says in the title plus more. On Saturday we saw the cave cliffs and lighthouse plus porpoises as we paddled along the Anglesey coast in lovely weather and a fairly calm sea.
On Sunday we visited Puffin Island and saw lots of wildlife including a young seal which played amongst our kyaks.
The return via an increased swell gave an exhilerating finale.
We had two excellent instructors - a superb weekend.
fantastic introduction to Kayak touring
I tried some river kayaking in the past (flat water) but always liked the idea of sea kayaking / touring. A small group of 6 and two instructors made up our mini expedition. We set off to explore a section of the north coast of Anglessey. Sea birds, seals, dolphins, caves, squeezing between rocky outcrops, it was all great fun. Emphasis on touring not so much teaching. The instructors are always keen to share tips and advice. Safety, planning and equipment are (as usual) excellent.
I would recommend this course to anyone who is comfortable in a kayak and wants to enjoy a leisurely tour observing marine life, birds etc. The intructors are very good at assessing the group's capability and paddling competence and tailor the days accordingly.
I will definitely be back for more. My next course will probably be rough water handling.
This was my first course at PYB, Even thought I had very little paddling experience & never been on the sea, I enjoyed it so much, seeing the wildlife, furthering my paddling skills etc
I think as long as your confident with being on the water - you dont need much if any experince on the sea before- this is the course for you plus the instructors are very patient & friendly.
see you again soon!!!
Thank you I had a great weekend on this course.
Day one we paddled round Puffin Island there were no Puffins but lots of seals very close to us basking on the rocks and swimming very close to our kayaks, at times within touching distance. There were also a huge variety of sea birds which you could get much closer to than on land.
Paddled from Benllech to Moelfre for lunch and back, another enjoyable days paddling.
Overall a really great weekend, good company, great weather.
Pete and the other staff really made it a memorable weekend.
Just a quick note to tell people what a fantastic two day course this is. Having completed the introduction to Sea Kayaking some months ago this stood out as the next rung on the Sea Kayaking ladder. We weren't disappointed. Despite the weather being foul at P.Y.B (no surprise there) and a South westerly blowing a force 4 - 5 gale on the coast, our instructor Carl found two reletively sheltered areas for us to Kayak around. Caves, cliffs and wildlife were certainly in abundance on the northern coast of Anglesey and whilst we didn't get to see a lighthouse it certainly didn't detract from a fantastic weekend on the waves.
If, like me you enjoy being able to get to all the little coves and caves, normally out of reach from the land, you'll love these two days.
For anyone who is new to the sport, do the introduction course first as the emphasis of the cliffs and caves course is on exploring the coastline and not so much on developing your paddling skills. That said, two days paddling in the wind and the currents off North Wales can't fail to improve your skills.
As ever, the instructors and staff at P.Y.B were fantastic, ditto the food and accomodation. What more can i say.
Guess i'd better start saving for the 5 day Hebridean expedition.

1 lighthouse, many caves and some seals
Had a good weekend paddling in the waters around anglesea.
As the course said we saw a lighthouse, some cliffs and many caves. What wasnt told about was the seals. Some really rude seals decided to make an appearance on the Sunday and scare my tranquil paddle. Who on earth wants big things with sharp teeth who smell of fish paddling with you????
We were really lucky as we left the rain behind us and paddled in beautiful sunshine all day.
Great chill out paddling weekend
Saturday was hard work...the wind was quite high by my standard, but now I feel a lot more confident in heavy swell + thanks to Ben for persuading me to leave my heavy paddle behind on day 2!
