John Cousins (January)
We saw this magnificent stag on our way towards the Hidden Valley in Glencoe during a winter mountaineering course.
Red deer get their names from their foxy red coats but in winter they grow a thicker grey brown coat for extra warmth. Stag numbers fluctuate depending on how severe the winter is, whereas the hinds are more affected by the number of competing sheep.
So our hopes for a continued good winter may impact on the number of antlers you see in future years!
