John Cousins (February)
I came across this lovely bracket fungus in the Afon Ddu gorge.
The 'brackets' are characteristically semicircular and flattened. They are a fungal fruiting bodies with pores or gills underneath, appear on the trunk of trees in cool, moist autumn weather, though some are visible all year round as in this case. Decay fungi, such as these, spread by airborne spores in autumn and grow into wounds in bark.
