John Cousins (March)
I spotted these lambs under Moel Cynghorion on Saturday as the first I have seen in the hills this year. They might be the scourge of flowers, trees and diverse vegetation but itâÂ.Â.s hard not to enjoy their youthful enthusiasm and recognise that in them 'spring has sprung'. Unfortunately, winter hasn't quite finished just yet and there was snow covering their fields two days later so I hope they and their mother found a suitable wall for shelter.
The move away from paying farmers per head for their livestock and to a single farm payment has helped reduced sheep numbers as have specialist agreements such as the one in Cwm Idwal where livestock has been largely excluded. To my eyes Cwm Idwal's vegetation is changing with more variety in the shades of green and brown on the floor, so congratulations to the National Trust, Countryside Council for Wales and the National Park in setting this up. Cute though the lambs are I'm happy to see less white and more green.
