I was lucky enough to attend the BMC AGM in Northumberland recently. The BMC put on a great show with lots of entertainment and some fantastic food, the AGM was very much kept in itâÂ.Â.s place! Most of the time was spent climbing on the wonderful Fell sandstone to be found in Northumberland.
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock which occurs infrequently in the area around Plas y Brenin so it was a great opportunity to climb on another rock type. In the photograph we see Ian McKenzie, the Chair of the BMC Midlands area soloing on Trail Wall and Bowdon Doors. You can see how wonderfully featured the rock is being composed of quartz rich sand grains usually laid down in a delta. One particularly interesting feature is the cross-bedding which you can see towards to the top of the photograph. Walk along any sandy beach and you will see these rolling depositions forming.
