Dean "Sid" Sinfield (June)
Whilst paddling along the west coast of Rum on our Hebridean Sea Kayak Expedition, enjoying the high pressure conditions with accompanying flat seas, we were suddenly joined by a pod of 6-8 Bottlenose dolphins.
They swam around and under us, breaking the surface from time to time, and even on occasions jumping clear of the water. They didnâÂ.Â.t seem in the least bit bothered by us. Quite the opposite, cruising slowly by at times only metres away.
We watched them for about 25 minutes, enjoying the idyllic setting and the display put on for us. As time was pressing on and we still had at least 10 km to paddle before camp we continued on our journey. When we paused a little later on we were once again joined by our aquatic friends who had been following us just off the back of the group. They continued with us until our pace was slowed slightly by a short section against the ebbing tide.
As we continued to our campsite they gave us a more distant display of acrobatics in the near mill pond conditions and then they were gone leaving us as soon as they had arrived but enriched with some great memories.
