Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary
Dave Cheetham (June)
I spotted This beautiful butterfly beside one of our minibuses and quickly whipped out my camera to grab a snap of it.
I'm no Einstein when it comes to butterflies so I'm afraid I had to call in the experts. With help from www.butterfly-conservation.org I discovered it is a small pearl bordered fritillary butterfly.
In order to seperate it from the many similar fritillary butterflies in my reference books Russel Hobson, Head of Butterfly Conservation Wales offered these pearls of identification wisdom:
It could not be a High Brown as they are still larvae at the only known site
in Wales which is in lowland Vale of Glamorgan."
Dr. Caroline Bulman, Senior Species Ecologist added:
Thanks to Russel and Caroline for their help.
