Also a novel, a play, a musical and a cocktail! The Scarlet Pimpernel is in fact a very pretty little flower. We spotted it recently whilst wandering round the sandy areas of Llanddwyn Island.
The Scarlet Pimpernel closes its petals when the sun goes in hence its other names of Poor ManâÂ.Â.s Weather Glass or Shepherd's Barometer. The Pimpernel flowers from May until late into August.
The plant has been much used by herbalists in the past with it being considered a universal panacea. Most interesting however is that is was considered to be a remedy for the bites of mad dogs! It has been used to dispel sadness whilst French dames used the distilled water or juice to cleanse the skin from any roughness, deformity or discolourings. Another old writer says 'the Herb Pimpernel is good to prevent witchcraft.
