Sheep Eating Bark
John Cousins (January)
We spotted this oak tree behind the Pinnacles in Capel Curig today. We have had such sustained low temperatures in the last four weeks that it is easy to understand why hungry sheep nibble anything that isn't frozen into the ground. I know of quite a few farmers whose water supplies froze so they had to turn the sheep and cattle out onto the hills rather than keep them in barns. The real problem comes if the sheep, goats or even ponies strip bark all the way around a branch because then the limb will die.
Although snow is forecast on the mountains in the next few days the ground has defrosted so hopefully the sheep can get back to eating grass.
