Fire in the Moelwyns
John Cousins (April)
Controlled burning of heather moorland is common practice in winter but the fire that burnt the Gwynant slopes of the Moelwyns between Pen y Gwryd and Bwlch y Rhediad at the weekend was most likely an accident. With the warmest April on record the ground feels pretty dry and four Fire tenders were parked at Pen y Gwryd while the crews did their best to contain a pretty extensive fire.
While the fire might help some vegetation to get established it also has the potential to do a lot of damage and limit the opportunities for our Mountain Leaders, while on assessment to identify the different heathers!
