About us

As a National Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin develops the people that develop the outdoor sector – from instructors to centre managers to expedition leaders to NGB officers to policymakers. This includes developing inspiring coaches, instructors and leaders in adventure sport, be they volunteers or working professionally in the sector, to better support people, from all backgrounds, to get active in the outdoors.

By hosting conferences, symposiums and meetings, we bring together practitioners from across the UK (and beyond) to share learning, transfer good practice and raise standards. This inspirational venue, with a world-class reputation, is also committed to helping individuals nurture their skills and confidence for independent adventures.

About the role

We are recruiting staff to deliver a wide range of both centre based and off-site activities (qualification dependent). Working hours are between 8.30am – 5.00pm however there may be times when you are required to work an evening session.

Rate of pay, £130 per day (plus £20 per evening session).

Below are the skills, experience and qualifications we are looking for.

Essential:

  • Experience of working with young people aged 8-18, in a range of outdoor activities.
  • Committed to improving the lives of children and young people.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent ability to communicate with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to solve problems when they arise, efficiently and effectively.
  • Self-motivated with a positive attitude.
  • A proven commitment to continued professional development.
  • A team player with initiative and a willingness to work effectively with others.
  • Commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • All freelance staff must pass strict safeguarding checks, including a DBS disclosure.
  • Ability to consistently deliver quality customer service and positive customer experiences
  • Problem solving abilities.
  • HSE recognised first aid certificate which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment. E.g. R.E.C Outdoor First Aid.
  • Good work ethic with a practical, flexible and dynamic approach to work.
  • At least one of the following NGB awards:
    • Mountain Leader Summer
    • BCU Paddlesport Leader or Paddlesport Instructor
    • Rock Climbing Instructor

Desirable:

  • Mountain Leader Award (Summer), Rock Climbing Instructor and Paddlesport Leader.
  • MCI, Winter ML, Higher Level Paddling Qualifications.
  • Other Qualifications e.g Local Cave and Mine Leadership, British Cycling Mountain Bike Leadership Awards etc.
  • Cat D1 Driving Licence
  • An excellent knowledge of health and safety issues relating to outdoor activities.
  • An understanding of the value of outdoor learning and associated outcomes.
  • Knowledge and experience of Rock and Water activities such as Gorge Scrambling.
