Advanced Scrambling
Taking on grade 2 and 3 scrambles is perhaps the biggest test of a mountaineer’s skills. A wealth of skills and techniques are needed to move safely and efficiently through this terrain. When it comes together though, it’s magic! Let our instructors shed some light on the dark arts of roped scrambling.

Overview
This weekend serves as an introduction to the vast array of skills and techniques needed in technical mountaineering terrain. We’ll show how the rope can be used in different ways to keep things safe and efficient and focus on the fundamentals of good decision making.
You can expect to spend the first day refreshing and developing ropework skills, with the following day spent putting them into practice on an appropriate scramble for the team.
Who’s This Aimed At?
To join this course we ask that you’ve either attended one of our Snowdonia Classic Guided Scrambles courses, have experience of rock climbing at Difficult or above, or have similar experience. This is to ensure everyone has a solid skillset and understanding of ropework upon which to build.

What Your Course May Look Like
Every course is unique as we tailor each one to the team and the weather, but this should give a flavour of what you might get up to:
Saturday
- Informal welcome chat with our staff and your course members;
- Head to stores to get kitted out;
- Discuss the weather and consider where’s best for the day;
- A technical skill day, focusing on mountaineering specific ropework;
- Belay refresher – building good anchors and attaching to them;
- Methods of belaying; direct around spikes, use of Italian hitch, body belaying, friction belays;
- Retrieveable abseils and using tat;
- Return to PYB for tea and cakes
Sunday
- Head out and apply everything we’ve covered on a scramble that’s appropriate to the team;
- This would commonly happen on grade 1 / 1+ terrain to ensure the focus is on the techniques rather than the difficulty of the scrambling;
- Return to PYB for tea and cake and a discussion about next steps.
