Overview 

Are you a solo paddler or a tandem team looking to master the art of white water paddling? This course is designed for recreational white water paddlers who aim to enhance their skills in water safety and rescue. Run in conjunction with British Canoeing, this course will guide you through all the essential elements of white water safety and rescue.

Day 1: We’ll kick off with a day on a local river, where you’ll develop safe swimming techniques and delve into essential rescue protocols such as Talk, Reach, Throw, Row, GO. This is where you’ll gain an understanding of the critical aspect of safety: avoidance. You’ll learn about hydrology, river hazards, and river running techniques.

Day 2: Focusing on safe group paddling and covering the remaining elements of the syllabus, you’ll gain hands-on experience with techniques such as simple and effective rescue and recovery, use of throwline, sling and two karabiner, as well as the use of chest harness and simple rope systems.

The Objectives 

You’ll understand the two key facets to water safety and rescue, and be able to apply them:

  1. Avoidance is better than cure, so you’ll develop an understanding of; hydrology, river hazards, river running techniques
  2. The techniques, so you’ll have hands-on experience of applying them; simple and effective rescue and recovery techniques, use of throwline, sling and two karabiner, use of chest harness and simple rope systems

What To Expect
