Peter Herd – Instructor

Mountaineering & Rock Climbing

I’m on the 2018 Instructor Scheme, an instructional development position which involves working full time within the instructional staff team. I work on and observe a variety of skills and qualification courses throughout the year and receive mentoring from the full-time staff. My personal and professional experience is predominantly in mountaineering and climbing. I enjoy the variety of work at Plas y Brenin, whether its introducing novices to hill walking, guiding scrambling or coaching skilled trad climbers.

Lots of good days out with mates. The best ones usually involve some sunshine, a little suffering and a swim.

  • A solo MTB trip in the Cairngorms as a naive 16-year-old.

  • Climbing 'The Naked Ape' on Creag an Dubh Loch.

  • Polyphemus and Parallel B gullies, a perfect conditions day on Lochnagar.

  • Any day on the Cuillin Ridge.

  • Introducing school kids to mountain walking in North West Scotland.

  • Original Route on the Rainbow Wall.

I’d like to get stuck into some longer, more remote rock routes in the Alps, Bugaboos or Norway.  In the near future, I’m trying to get around some of the classic walks, scrambles and climbs that North Wales has to offer.
