Growing up in Cairo\, kiteboarding was never on the forefront of Sarah’s mind. That is\, until she started visiting the small town of Dahab’s beautiful blue lagoons and began watching the boys in this exciting new sport called kiteboarding. Now\, she lives here\, amongst the Bedouin tribes that are not accustomed to seeing women in these roles nor in the water. \nFamily Routes\nLeanne Robinson and Dwayne Wohlgemuth embarked on a summer-long canoe trip across the Northwest Territories with their two sons: four-year-old Emile\, and one-year-old Aleksi. Leaf + Shoot is an underground vertical bioponic farm built in a disused spring factory. His closed-loop system takes the food waste from local restaurants\, cafes\, and businesses in his community and uses organic cycling methods including worm farms and hot composting to grow micro-herbs and vegetables beneath the streets of Sheffield. The visit is set amidst the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow\, a moment in history the world needed to listen to them as guardians of the forests\, but instead left them feeling ignored and sidelined. As a steward of the land\, Sasha has gained valuable insights into how fire can be harnessed to promote land health\, and she has come to understand its importance for certain plants like the Fire Poppy\, which depend on it for growth. \nNo Lost Shoes (12 mins) \nOur shoes go lots of places\, across vast distances\, and over many miles. But eventually\, no matter how much we care for them\, our shoes break down and usually get thrown away. Max Romey wanted to find out what happens to his old shoes\, and in his film No Lost Shoes\, highlights the full scale of the problem. \nAn Eye for Plants (4 mins) \nPlant blindness is our tendency to overlook and undervalue the plants around us. Dr Margaret Bradshaw champions doing the opposite. If anyone can encourage us to overcome plant blindness\, it’s Margaret. A passionate botanist\, Margaret has studied and campaigned for the protection of the rare flora of Teesdale\, in England’s County Durham\, for over seven decades. SUMMARY:Sheepfolds of the Carneddau - not just a pile of old stones!
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be welcoming Nigel Beidas back to Plas y Brenin for another in his popular series of lectures on the SheepFolds of the Carnaddau. \nThere are over 3\,000 sheepfolds across north west Wales\, but only around 100 of these are the very large\, communal\, folds that farmers have used to sort the flocks of sheep that graze on the mountains over the summer. This talk looks at how these large folds work\, when\, why and where they were built and how they fit into the history of Welsh hill farming – and how they are linked to an island off Croatia. As well as the sheepfolds\, the talk will look at cover some of the other old stone structures that played a part in sheep farming. Many sheepfolds are now falling into disrepair but the talk will finish by showing how some are still being used today\, continuing the pattern and rhythm of gathering sheep from the hills that goes back over 250 years. \nThese lectures are fascinating and extremely well attended\, so don’t miss out.
