A Royal History
Built in 1801 by Lord Penrhyn as the Capel Curig Inn, Plas y Brenin once hosted British royalty, including Queen Victoria and Kings Edward VII, VIII, and George V. Renamed the Royal Hotel in 1870, it served as a hotel for over 150 years, with a brief stint as a mountain warfare training centre during WWII.
Acquired in 1955 by the Central Council for Physical Recreation, with funding from King George VI’s memorial fund, it became a national recreation centre and was renamed Plas y Brenin, meaning ‘The King’s Place’.
Since then, it has remained a leader in outdoor instruction, offering diverse courses while emphasizing the importance of outdoor activity.
Since 1997, the Mountain Training Trust, a non-profit founded by British mountaineering organisations, has operated Plas y Brenin on behalf of Sport England, ensuring world-class training and promoting outdoor engagement for all skill levels.
