Sheepfolds of the Carneddau

29 October @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Not just a pile of stone! A talk by Nigel Beidas.

There are over 3,000 sheepfolds across north west Wales, but only around 100 of these are the very large, communal, folds that farmers have used to sort the flocks of sheep that graze on the mountains over the summer. In his talk, Nigel will look at how these large folds work, when, why and where they were built and how they fit into the history of Welsh hill farming – and how they are linked to an island off Croatia.

As well as the sheepfolds, the talk will look at cover some of the other old stone structures that played a part in sheep farming. Many sheepfolds are now falling into disrepair but the talk will finish by showing how some are still being used today, continuing the pattern and rhythm of gathering sheep from the hills that goes back over 250 years
