As a National Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin develops the people that develop the outdoor sector – from instructors to centre managers to expedition leaders to NGB officers to policymakers. This includes developing inspiring coaches, instructors and leaders in adventure sports, be they volunteers or working professionally in the sector, to better support people, from all backgrounds to get active in the outdoors.

By hosting conferences, symposiums and meetings, we bring together practitioners from across the UK (and beyond) to share learning, transfer good practice and raise standards. Head of Mountaineering – Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre
Location: North Wales Salary: £43,000 Full-time/FTE/Job Share, Permanent

The Role
We’re seeking an experienced and inspiring leader to join us as Head of Mountaineering. You’ll lead and develop our mountaineering programme, ensuring it is safe, high-quality, and innovative. You’ll manage and motivate a high-performing instructional team, set the culture, and foster a supportive learning environment.

You’ll also have departmental oversight including budget, people management, performance, and collaborating across the organisation to deliver impact and innovation.

You’ll Bring

  • WMCI qualification (essential)
  • Safeguarding and First Aid certification
  • Experience delivering and directing Mountain Training qualifications
  • Safety-critical experience
  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and performance management
  • Financial and operational awareness

Desirable: BMG, IML, ILM/business qualification, Welsh language skills, D1 licence.

We’re Looking For

A credible and experienced Paddlesport professional who combines technical expertise with strategic leadership and the ability to inspire change.

Essential

  • High level BCAB Coach status, or an equivalent high-level Paddlesport coaching qualification with the ability to achieve BCAB Performance Coach status
  • Extensive Paddlesport coaching experience, including expedition leadership
  • First Aid and Safeguarding qualification
  • Experience working in safety-critical environments
  • Strong leadership and people development skills
  • Financial awareness and operational oversight
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement
  • D1 driving licence

Desirable

  • BCAB Tutor status, or willingness to work towards this
  • D1 plus E driving licence
  • Experience managing performance, programmes, and teams
  • WCMI / MCI / ML / RCI qualifications or equivalent expedition leadership experience
  • Leadership or business qualification (e.g. ILM)
  • Safeguarding Level 3

Senior Instructor – Mountain Activities

About the Role
Join the instructional team at Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre, the UK’s National Outdoor Centre, and help shape the future of mountain training and development. We are seeking an experienced and inspiring Senior Instructor to deliver world-class mountaineering courses in the mountains of Eryri / Snowdonia and play a key role in maintaining Plas y Brenin’s reputation as a centre of excellence for mountain leadership, coaching and professional training.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a highly respected team delivering courses for recreational mountaineers and professional instructors, including programmes aligned with Mountain Training England (MTE), Mountain Training Cymru (MTC) and Mountain Training UK & Ireland (MTUKI).

As a senior member of the instructional team, you will also contribute to the continued development, quality and innovation of the centre’s instructional programme.

Key Responsibilities
Course Delivery and Leadership

  • Deliver high-quality instruction across a wide range of mountain courses and
    programmes.
  • Course direct a range of mountain training and skills courses, ensuring safe, engaging
    and effective learning experiences.
  • Deliver and support Mountain Training qualification training and assessment
    courses.
  • Provide exceptional coaching and customer experience to participants of varying
    abilities and backgrounds.

Programme Development

  • Contribute to the planning and development of Plas y Brenin’s Mountain training provision.
  • Develop and share course resources, teaching materials and instructional approaches that enhance learning and delivery quality.
  • Remain up to date with emerging practices and developments within mountain training and outdoor education.

Instructional Leadership

  • Provide leadership and mentoring to colleagues during course delivery.
  • Support the development of less experienced instructors and contribute to a positive instructional culture within the team.
  • Deputise for the Head of Mountaineering where required, supporting continuity of programme delivery.

Safety and Quality Assurance

  • Maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism in all instructional activity.
  • Contribute to the development and review of instructor guidance, operational procedures and activity risk assessments.
  • Support quality assurance processes that maintain Plas y Brenin’s reputation for excellence.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with operational teams to ensure courses are delivered effectively and safely.
  • Liaise with stores and logistics teams to ensure equipment and resources are maintained to the required standards.
  • Transport course participants and staff using the centre’s minibuses when required.

Wider Contribution

  • Represent Plas y Brenin professionally when working with partners, National Governing Bodies and external organisations.
  • Contribute to the wider activities and initiatives of the centre, including outreach programmes and special projects where appropriate.
  • Support the continued development of a positive, inclusive and collaborative culture within the organisation.

Essential Requirements

  • Significant experience delivering mountain-based instruction and training.
  • Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) and extensive experience within Mountain Training schemes.
  • Strong coaching, communication and teaching skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to support and mentor other instructors.
  • Knowledge of safety management and risk assessment in mountain environments.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Driving a minibus is an essential requirement of this role. Candidates who do not currently hold the appropriate entitlement must be willing to obtain it within the first six months of employment.

Desirable

  • Course Director status for Mountain Training qualification courses. Winter Mountain Leader Course Director particularly desirable.
  • Experience course directing training or skills programmes.
  • Membership of a professional association e.g. AMI or BMG
  • Ability to contribute across other areas of Plas y Brenin’s course programme.
  • Additional outdoor instructional qualifications.
  • Experience working in a national centre or high-volume course environment.
  • Welsh language skills.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Instructor to join the Mountaineering and Climbing Department at Plas y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre. You will deliver high-quality instructional courses and programmes in mountaineering, climbing, and mountain skills to a wide range of participants including individuals, groups, and professional trainees.

Working within a highly experienced instructional team, you will contribute to the delivery of residential courses, skills training, and guided experiences in the mountains of North Wales. You will play an important role in maintaining the centre’s reputation for excellence in mountain instruction while ensuring the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and participant experience.

You will be required to support wider centre activities where appropriate, including outreach programmes and initiatives designed to broaden access to mountain environments and develop the next generation of mountaineers

You’ll Bring

  • MCI (Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor) or equivalent qualification
  • Current First Aid and Safeguarding certification
  • Experience delivering mountaineering and climbing instruction to a range of abilities
  • Strong knowledge of mountain safety management and industry good practice
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and support participants in challenging mountain environments

Desirable

  • BMG Trainee or close to application for the British Mountain Guides training scheme
  • Higher mountaineering awards (e.g. WMCI, Winter ML, or equivalent)
  • British Cycling Mountain Bike Leader Level 2 or Level 3
  • D1 (minibus) and D1+E (trailers) driving licence – Driving a minibus is an essential requirement of this role. Candidates who do not currently hold the appropriate entitlement must be willing to obtain it within the first six months of employment.
