A lecture by Gem Simmons – Area Coordinator in North Wales for British Divers Marine Life Rescue
Growing up in North Wales, Gem always had a passion for the outdoors and felt more at home in the water than on land. While nurturing a love for wild swimming and outdoor adventure, Gems wildlife encounters ignited a passion for marine life leading to a career in marine mammal research and rescue as a marine biologist. Witnessing newer and ever increasing threats to the marine life we share our seas with, spurred the creation of a non profit organisation combining her love for wild spaces with hands on conservation and highlighting the potential for successful citizen science methodologies and showcasing how people powered conservation from outdoor communities can ultimately save our species on the edge.
Gem will take us on a deep dive beneath the waves to discover what is happening along our coasts and learn more about the organisations on the frontline of Welsh marine conservation efforts as well as how to get involved. The talk will offer a behind the scenes look at some of our famous critical incidents and might even inspire you to train as a marine mammal medic with British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
