British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader Training

The Paddlesport leader award will support and enable you to run safe and enjoyable journeys on sheltered water, for a range of mixed craft.
A paddlesport leader award enables you to lead trips and journeys on open water with winds up to force 3 and on gently moving rivers and slow-moving estuaries.
The Paddlesport Leader Award is open to all paddlers!

This two day course is created to develop the skills required to lead on sheltered water. We’ll develop your personal paddling skills, rescue skills and leadership skills and you’ll come away with a clear understanding of what and assessment looks like and your journey to getting there.

The Objectives

You’ll develop the leadership skills needed to look after others in both single discipline and mixed fleets, for example; touring kayaks, open canoes, suitable sit on tops, general purpose kayaks, stand up paddleboards, crew boats, or racing craft. You’ll also learn how to apply your leadership skills to groups undertaking journeys for different purposes ranging from school or outdoor education activity to commercial paddlesport guiding. This course will equip you with the knowledge to go out and build the experience you need to prepare for the Paddlesport Leader Assessment.

What To Expect

You’ll spend most of the time on the water taking a practical look at the effective leadership of a mixed fleet of craft including canoes , kayaks and SUPs. You’ll have one day on a lake and the other on a slow moving river. We’ll give you plenty of opportunity to try out your skills in a real world setting.

Experience Required

There are no formal prerequisites for the training course however you’ll need to be able to independently paddle your craft on sheltered water. Holding an explore award or a personal performance award would be a good platform to get the most from this course.

How Should I Prepare

Ensure you’re confident manoeuvring your craft on sheltered water.
