Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment

Overview

We’ll spend three days on the hill and moorland terrain that’s around the big peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia).  We create a positive and relaxed assessment environment so that you can perform at your best.  We will assess you against the syllabus (set by Mountain Training) of the award whilst looking for opportunities to develop your skills.

The Objective

The aim is for you to enjoy the experience, improve your knowledge and have a fair assessment.

What to Expect

You’ll be assessed against the Mountain Training Hill and Moorland Qualification Syllabus over three days.  We’ll have,

• 3 days on the hill
• Evening sessions covering theory
• One night navigation

Experience Required

Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:

• You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption);
• You must be familiar with the syllabus;
• You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland;
• You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Hill and Moorland Leader.

The Hill and Moorland Leader assessment is 3 days long.

How Should I Prepare?

Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:

• Have completed your consolidation period action plan
• You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
• You must be familiar with the syllabus
• You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
• You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment

Note: Our instructors will assess any safety equipment you bring with you. If they consider it to be below the required standard, you will be asked to use equipment provided free of charge by Plas y Brenin.
