Overview
You’ll spend three mainly practical days on the local hills and moors showing us that you’ve got the skills to meet the standards set by Mountain Training.

What to Expect
You’ll be assessed against the Mountain Training Hill and Moorland Qualification Syllabus over three days on the hill. There will be theoretical evening sessions between and also one practical night navigation after dark.
Experience Required
Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:
- You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption);
- You must be familiar with the syllabus;
- You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland;
- You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Hill and Moorland Leader.
The Hill and Moorland Leader assessment is 3 days long.
How Should I Prepare?
Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader assessment, make sure you have done the following:
- Have completed your consolidation period action plan
- You must have attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
- You must be familiar with the syllabus
- You must have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
- You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment
