Course Breakdown

Overview

Scrambles are rocky ridges to follow in the mountains. They vary in length, difficulty and exposure; all provide exhilarating days out in the mountains. We’ll share the skills needed to take on scrambles by yourself enjoyably and safely. Each day will build on the previous, so by the end of the course you should feel confident about planning a day based on the weather and conditions, using a guidebook, route–find and move smoothly and efficiently on exposed rocky ground. And obviously, we will tick some of Snowdonia’s classic scrambles!

The Objectives

  • You’ll work on personal movement skills on rock, building up confidence on exposed scrambling terrain.
  • You’ll spend time in the mountains on grade one scrambles (the lowest difficulty grade) and learning how to read scramble guidebooks to choose, find and then follow the scramble.
  • You’ll use your hands and feet to travel over varied terrain, and learn how to safely navigate steeper ground. You’ll learn how to reach places which require a little more judgement about terrain than you currently possess.
  • Spend five days consolidating these skills on great scrambles and having an amazing time.

What to Expect

You’ll learn how to make wise choices about exciting scrambling routes, move efficiently and safely over steeper terrain, interpret scrambling guidebooks and navigate on scrambles.

Experience Required

If you’ve gazed up at a rocky ridge and thought ‘I wonder how you do that,’ or ‘that looks fun’, but didn’t know how to do it, then this is the course for you! It’s pitched at experienced hill walkers who’d like to take on more technical ground. You can expect to ascend a major summit (3000 feet) each day, so a high level of fitness is needed for the week. A good height for heights is important too as we’ll be in exposed positions at times.

How Should I Prepare?

You need to be reasonably fit. But we’ll tailor the course to the needs of those attending.
