James Brownhill Memorial Fund
In our role as the National Outdoor Centre, our primary goal is to encourage and support as many people as possible to get active outdoors. We recognise that in some cases, the primary barrier to individuals receiving the training they need is cost, so, as a not-for-profit organisation, we continually strive to ensure our course fees remain as low as possible. We also work with other organisations who provide funding support for specific opportunities.

James Brownhill Memorial Fund: Applications now open
Scottish winter mountaineering for full-time students
James Brownhill was an avid climber and mountaineer who tragically died in an accident on the Frendo Spur in Chamonix. Following his death, his family members established the fund to encourage and foster a higher level of safety, good practice and sustainability amongst young climbers and mountaineers.
The fund subsidises eight dedicated places on a Plas y Brenin Scottish Winter Mountaineering course every year. Applicants must be over 18 years old and be in full-time education.The applicants must be a member of a university mountaineering club to be eligible for the bursary.
Dates- 16th to 20th February 2026
Location – Glencoe at Alltshellach
The full value of a place on this course is £1045 the James Brownhill Memorial Fund will make a contribution of £645 per place, leaving a student contribution of £400.
