Overview
Welcome to a five-day rock climbing course tailored for young climbers aged 12-17 who are ready to make the leap from indoor walls to outdoor rock. In the picturesque surroundings of North Wales, our friendly, enthusiastic, and highly qualified instructors will guide you on a journey towards becoming a self-sufficient outdoor climber. You’ll discover the intricacies of climbing on different rock types, refine your technique, and confront the unique challenges of outdoor climbing. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to try thrilling climbing-related activities, such as sea-level traversing, gorge walking, and scrambling. You’ll leave this course well-prepared and enthusiastic about tackling outdoor crags with confidence.
The Objectives
During this course, our primary objectives are to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to confidently climb outdoors. You’ll learn in a supportive and friendly environment, alongside fellow young climbers who share your passion. Over five days, you’ll develop as a climber and gain invaluable practical experience in outdoor climbing.

Itinerary
The week begins with outdoor bouldering and single-pitch climbs, which are less than one rope length high. As your skills progress, we’ll move on to larger multi-pitch crags, exploring as many different types of crags as possible to provide you with diverse climbing experiences. We’ll cover essential topics such as climbing equipment, knots, and rope techniques, belaying from the bottom and top of the crag, abseiling, outdoor safety practices, using guidebooks, and where to find valuable climbing information. After completing the course, you’ll be well-prepared to continue your climbing journey outdoors. T
Experience Required
To get the most from this experience, it’s essential that you have prior indoor climbing experience and a basic understanding of top-rope systems and belaying. This course is designed to take your climbing skills to new heights and help you embrace the exciting world of outdoor climbing.
How Should I Prepare/What to Bring?
- Outdoor wear which is comfortable to climb in – prepare for any weather! T-shirt, thermal layer/base layer, fleece top, tracksuit bottoms or tights (shorts can be nice in summer), trainers, warm hat, gloves, sun hat, waterproof jacket and trouser.
- Rucksack (approx. 40-50 Litres).
- Drinks bottle, flask, lunch bag, sunglasses, high factor sunscreen, midge repellent, notebook and pen, small personal first aid kit.
- Climbing shoes,
- Helmet,
- Harness,
- Chalk bag,
- Belay device,
- Nut key, any climbing rack/gear you own.
The following items are available for you to borrow from our equipment stores so you don’t need to rush out to buy them:
Any climbing gear, rucksack, waterproof jacket and trousers. Climbing ropes are always provided by Plas y Brenin

As both your body and mind will be working hard while you’re with us, we want to help you focus on achieving the goal you’ve set for yourself. So, if you’re staying with us, comfortable accommodation (with WiFi included) and home-cooked meals are part of the deal. You don’t need to think about sorting this out for yourself. Support is on hand from our friendly and exceptionally well-qualified staff to help develop your understanding and personal skills. They also assist you in formulating an appropriate action plan for your further development.
