Course Breakdown

Overview

With this qualification you can develop peoples climbing ability in all areas of single pitch climbing. This can include the coaching and supervision of traditional lead climbing.

This is the ultimate qualification for all those who seek to be an advanced climbing coach in all outdoor single-pitch environments.

How should I prepare?

This is an intensive 3-day assessment process. Candidates should be current and well-practiced in all aspects of the syllabus and expect to be assessed in any of them at some point during the course.

An approved training course must have been completed before you can book an assessment.

Who is this aimed at?

Rock Climbing Development Instructor Trainees

Objectives

You will be assessed in the following key areas to a greater or lesser extent, during your assessment course.

  • Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, and background knowledge)
  • Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing participants, decision making, knowledge and demonstration of techniques, personal safety)
  • Teaching Skills
  • The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette, and ethics)

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Day: Personal Climbing Competency on trad climbs at VS 4c including use of series and parallel rope systems.

Day 2

  • Morning -Personal sport climbing competency at F6a
  • Afternoon- Use of Sport Climbing venues with Mock Students.
  • Evening: Written Exam Paper

Day 3

  • Day: Trad Climbing with Mock Students

Experience Required

Post training and before presenting yourself for assessment:

  • You must have logged a minimum of 10 rock climbing teaching days with students at a variety of outdoor venues.
  • You must have led a minimum of 30 single pitch routes using leader placed protection in three different climbing areas at VS 4c or above and recorded them in DLOG.
  • You may include full multi-pitch routes using leader placed protection (up to 50% of the requirement).
  • You must have led a minimum of 30 sport climbs in three different climbing areas at 6a or above and recorded them in DLOG. Up to 50% of this experience can be outside the UK and Ireland.
  • You must have physically attended and completed (i.e. not online) a first aid course which involved a least two full days of sixteen hours of instruction and included an element of assessment.

Assessment candidates will be expected to provide all necessary hardware to carry out the job of a rock climbing development instructor. Ropes will be provided from our stores.
