Rock Climbing Instructor training - 3 Days

Overview

Whether you’re a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, this course prepares you to supervise safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will use their experience to equip you with the skills needed whilst we have a good time climbing on some great crags.

This Mountain Training accredited course runs over three days for those who have not completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training.  A two-day version is available for people who have completed their Climbing Wall Instructor Training.

The Objectives  

• You’ll gain the skills you need to supervise climbers on single pitch crags, purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders.
• You’ll cover the skills on the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus, after which you can go for a period of consolidation before your Rock Climbing Instructor assessment.

What To Expect

• Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, abseiling, background knowledge)
• Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing other staff, managing participants, knowledge and demonstration of techniques)
• Teaching Skills
• The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)

Experience Required

You must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland
• Have led 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
• Have led 15 routes at a climbing wall.
• Have led 5 routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
• Be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups

How Should I Prepare?

Before you book onto a Rock Climbing Instructor training course, you must have done the following; registered on the scheme led at least 15 graded rock climbs with traditional protection led at least 15 climbing wall routes led at least 5 outdoor bolt protected sport climbs
