Overview
Whether you’re a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, this course prepares you to supervise safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will equip you with the technical competence, teaching skills, and management and decision making, skills to become a single pitch instructor. The course runs over two days for those who have completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training as it doesn’t cover the indoor element of the qualification.
The Objectives
- You’ll gain the skills you need to supervise climbers on single pitch crags and boulders.
- You’ll cover the skills on the Rock Climbing Instructor syllabus, after which you can go for a period of consolidation before your Rock Climbing Instructor assessment.

What To Expect
Technical Competence (including equipment, anchors, belaying, personal skills, abseiling, background knowledge)
Management and Decision Making (including planning, organising, managing other staff, managing participants, knowledge and demonstration of techniques)
Teaching Skills
The Climbing Environment (including access, conservation, etiquette and ethics)
You’ll find detailed information on each of the above topics in the Rock Climbing Instructor handbook.
Experience Required
You must;
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland
- Have led 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
- Have led 15 routes at a climbing wall.
- Have led 5 routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
- Have completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training.*
- You should also; be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups
*If you have not done this, you must attend a three day Rock Climbing Instructor training course.
How Should I Prepare?
Before you book onto a Rock Climbing Instructor training course, you must have done the following; registered on the scheme led at least 15 graded rock climbs with traditional protection led at least 15 climbing wall routes led at least 5 outdoor bolt protected sport climbs
