Overview

Get ready for an action-packed five-day holiday that promises a unique and memorable experience amidst the breath-taking landscapes of the British mountains and coastline. You’ll have the chance to dive into various thrilling activities, including bouldering, rock climbing (both indoor and outdoor), orienteering, canoeing, kayaking, mountain walking, scrambling, gorge walking, and even the art of building and paddling your very own raft. The only requirement is your sense of adventure, and our team of friendly and highly experienced instructors will ensure you have an incredible time.

Our primary goal is to provide you with a fantastic and adventurous week that introduces you to a variety of outdoor activities, all while having a great time. Plas y Brenin’s supportive and friendly environment is the perfect backdrop for creating lasting friendships and memories.

Itinerary

Throughout the week, we’ll be flexible to make the most of the weather and ensure you have the most fun possible. Your days will be filled with a range of exciting activities:

  • Rock Climbing: Learn to control each other’s safety rope as you take on the crags and ledges of rocky cliffs. For evenings or bad weather, we also have an indoor climbing wall.
  • Bouldering: Conquer shorter climbs on large boulders without ropes, giving you the freedom to just go for it.
  • Orienteering: Race to find points around the woods using a map and compass, putting your navigation skills to the test.
  • Sea-level Traversing/Coasteering: Embark on an adventure along the rocky coastline, just above the sea, or dangle over the waves as you cross by rope, all under the watchful eye of our experienced guides.
  • Canoeing and Kayaking: Discover different types of paddling on the lakes nestled within the mountains, experiencing the beauty of the waterways.
  • Mountain Walk: Aim for the summit of one of Snowdon’s iconic peaks, exploring the stunning mountain scenery.
  • Gorge Walk: Scramble up the rocky riverbed, navigating between obstacles while climbing, wading, and maybe even swimming.

Experience Required

To join this course, you should be between 12-17 years old and possess a good sense of adventure.

How Should I Prepare/What to Bring?

Essential Items

  • Warm outdoor clothing such as (including some clothes you don’t mind getting wet for water activities)
  • Tracksuit or walking trousers (not jeans or heavy cotton)
  • Tops – long and short-sleeved (ideally not cotton, poor insulation properties, thermal tops are ideal)
  • Fleeces/warm tops (not cotton)
  • Some thick socks for wearing with walking boots
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Outdoor footwear (shoes you don’t mind getting muddy)
  • Trainers or wetsuit boots for water activities
  • Warm hat, gloves/mitts, sun hat/cap
  • Swimwear
  • Large towel
  • Drinks bottle – 1 litre Lunch box/bag
  • High factor suncream (min factor 30)
  • Midge Repellant
  • Rucksack liner (3-4 bin bags is fine)
  • Sandals/flip flops or spare shoes for wearing around the centre

Suggested Additional Items

  • Spare trainers (in case others get wet)
  • Flask Torch (head-torch is best, don’t forget batteries!)
  • Small amount of cash
  • Notebook and pen
  • Camera
  • Book, games etc. for the evenings when you’re not on activities

If you already have these items please bring them however, all of these are available to borrow from our stores free of charge:

  • Wetsuit
  • Walking boots
  • Rucksack

We have an excellent drying room, where clothes should dry overnight if wrung out and hung carefully, but do bring a few changes. Our shop stocks various items such as chocolates, sweets, books, rucksack liners and batteries. If you are using this course for your Gold Residential for the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, don’t forget to bring your e-dofe number with you.

As both your body and mind will be working hard while you’re with us, we want to help you focus on enjoying all these new activities. So, comfortable accommodation (with WiFi included) and good food are part of the deal. You don’t need to think about sorting this out for yourself. Support is on hand from our friendly and exceptionally well-qualified staff.
