Before assessment day, there are a few key steps you must complete to make sure everything runs smoothly:
Check the Prerequisites
Head over to the British Canoeing Awarding Body website and read the Award Overview to make sure you’ve got all the prerequisites covered for your chosen award.
Register for Your Assessment
You’ll need to register through your National Association membership portal. Once logged in, look for the assessment registration link in your menu.
After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation certificate — don’t forget to email it to us at bookings@pyb.co.uk at least 3 weeks before your assessment date but you can e-mail it at point of booking.
Without registration and your certificate, we won’t be able to assess you!

Planning Your Assessment Day
You’re responsible for choosing the venues, routes, and sessions.
You can meet us at Plas y Brenin if your chosen venues are nearby — or we can meet you on location.
Your assessor will get in touch one week beforehand to confirm details and help you feel fully prepped.

On the Day
Your assessor will kick things off with a detailed briefing, then it’s over to you and your Mock Students to lead the day.
You’ll also need to demonstrate leadership and rescue skills, so make sure your plans reflect the real-world challenges of the environment for your award.

Who’s Paddling with You?
You’ll need to bring paddlers with you — ideally, you source them yourself. If that’s tricky, let us know as soon as possible.
Here’s how many are needed:
Paddlesport Leader & Paddlesport Touring Leader: Minimum of 4 students
All other leadership awards: Minimum of 3 students
Coach Assessments: Minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 students
Students must be suitable for the award environment – they should need leading, but have some paddling experience in that environment.

Rescue Practice
As part of your assessment, you’ll need to handle a range of rescue scenarios appropriate to your environment. Make sure:
You’ve read the assessment guidance (https://britishcanoeingawarding.org.uk/) thoroughly.
Your participants are briefed and ready to assist with rescues on the day.
